The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (“BCTF”) is committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of personal information and complying with British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act.
Our goal is to provide you with all the information you need to enjoy and learn about the event you are attending and to build new connections with other participants. To help us do that, we collect personal data when you register, contact us with inquiries, or use certain parts of the event app ("app").
In British Columbia, under the Personal Information Protection Act, “personal information” means information about an identifiable individual and includes employee personal information but does not include contact information or work product information. Your personal information is collected in order to establish your profile on the event app. You may provide only your email address and a password in order to register for the app or you may provide more detailed information in order to complete your profile and communicate with other BCTF members through the app.
Whether you provide information beyond your email address and the password you establish for log-in is voluntary. Your contact and profile information within the app will be available to other app users so that they can communicate with you. We may use your information to:

- meet attendees needs at the event;
- make a tailored event app;
- send announcements about the event;
- send notifications and private messages received through the app;
- to better understand your needs and how you engaged with the elements of the event;
- for crime and fraud prevention, detection and related purposes; or other legal requirements to access or disclose information.
Why do we collect this information?
We collect and use your personal information in order to establish your profile in the app and provide you with information about the event. We also use your personal information for our legitimate interests, including:
- identifying the participants at our events;
- managing access to our event and online services;
- allowing users of the app to recognize you as the author of private messages;
- letting other participants find you in the app;
- protecting participants, employees and other individuals and maintaining their safety, health and welfare;
- understanding our participants’ behaviour, activities, preferences, and needs;
- complying with our legal and regulatory obligations;
- preventing, investigating and detecting crime, fraud or harassing behaviour;
- handling participant contacts, queries, complaints or disputes;
- effectively handling any legal claims or regulatory enforcement actions taken against us; and fulfilling our duties to our members, participants, staff and other stakeholders.
